In a small town, a young man once visited a market to make a phone call at an old STD booth. The booth owner, a man in his mid-fifties, sat thoughtfully behind the counter as the young man entered the small chamber to make his call.
In his hurry, the young man forgot to close the booth door properly. His conversation became clearly audible to the owner. He was speaking to a woman on the other end.
“Madam,” he said earnestly, “I desperately need a job. Could you please give me one?”
The lady replied, “But I already have someone working for me.”
“Ma’am, I can do the gardening better than anyone else,” said the young man. “And I’ll work for half the salary he’s getting.”
The lady politely refused. “No, he’s been with me for a long time and does his job very well. I’m completely satisfied with him.”
Still, the young man persisted, “Ma’am, I can make your garden the most beautiful in town. I’ll even help with other tasks — like bringing vegetables from the market. Please give me a chance.”
The lady said firmly, “I don’t need anyone right now. Thank you.” With that, she ended the call.
A Surprising Revelation
The booth owner, who had overheard the entire conversation, felt a wave of sympathy for the young man. As the man came out, the owner said gently, “Son, I heard your conversation. If you need work, you can help me with my garden. I’ll pay you fairly.”
